Turnover Margin comparisons: New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys (12/11/11)

Without any other statistics, one can probably tell how many wins and losses an NFL team has by looking at their individual game turnover margin. If a team creates more takeaways than giveaways, they have a great chance of winning. This Sunday Night Football game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys will be won or lost by how many turnovers these teams create.

The Cowboys are 7-5 this season, are first place in the NFC East, is 13th in the league in offensive production, 10th in the league in defense and have a +5 turnover margin — which is 6th best in the NFL.

The Giants are 6-6 this season, are in second place in the NFC East, is 11th in the league in offensive production, 28th in the league in defense and have a +4 turnover margin — which is 9th best in the NFL.

Game-by-game turnover margins tell a very important story as the Cowboys have four losses in the games they have a negative or zero turnover margin in. The Giants also have five losses in games they have a negative or zero turnover margin in.

This isn’t rocket science. Defenses may win championships, but in reality it’s the defenses that can get the ball away from their opponent while making sure the offense doesn’t give it right back that truly makes a champion.
